An interviewer suggested a black man cut his braids in order to look more professional and get hired
When applying for a job in Austin, Texas, Savion J. Wright explained in a Facebook post, he was “floored” to hear that he’d have to cut his hair — which he’s been growing out for nine years — to get the job. The perception that a black person’s hair is somehow less professional than a white person’s remains unfortunately widespread. On Thursday, Alabama even ruled in favor of upholding a disturbingly racist regulation about dreadlocks.“It’s just hair!”
They don’t realize braids and locs are the best option when you’re working full time. Our hair can take hours and hours to do! With locs or braids we can just get up and leave the house like they can!! This always pisses me off because a white lady can show up with her hair still damp from the shower, not styled just kinda falling the way it does, but if I walk in with neat beautiful braids I might get talked to. It’s 100% about race
