Hi! Thanks so much for your post about Syria. Do you have advice for how we can speak up for Syria? I don't really know who to contact or how. Congress? Activists? Newspapers? Where can my voice actually catch someone's ear? (and ideally, is there any way to help without using a phone? socially anxious/voice dysphoric/hard of hearing people would really appreciate it.) Thank you! <3

of course <3

here’s a list of things you can do, put together by the syrian solidarity committee;

• Support humanitarian efforts. You can donate, volunteer your team, expertise, etc to support on the ground non-profits The need is large. Some that you can support: Karam Foundation, NuDay Syria, Syrian American Medical Society, Syrian Civil Defence, UNRWA

• Support Syrian groups reporting on war crimes (Some examples: Violations Documentation Center, Syrian Network for Human Rights)
• Sign the Need for Accountability and Justice from Manbij to Ghouta to Aleppo statement

• If your country is involved in airstrikes against Syria, call on your leaders to stop

• Arrange film screenings in your local community to educate people about the revolution and subsequent crises. Some examples: RETURN TO HOMS, BORDER, THE SUFFERING GRASSES, WE CAN GO THERE NOW MY DEAR, THE JOURNEY FROM SYRIA, OUR TERRIBLE COUNTRY, STREETS OF FREEDOM, SYRIA: SNAPSHOTS OF HISTORY IN THE MAKING

• Read BURNING COUNTRY. Either by yourself or in a reading group

• Follow informed, principled people on Twitter to stay up to date on current events. For a list: https://twitter.com/ramahkudaimi/lists/syria

• Do you work on prisoners, abolition, torture? Make the link with Syrian prisoners and highlight the plight of Syrian prisoners

• Push local media to run stories that actually feature Syrians

• Challenge problematic coverage on Syria

• Invite and host Syrians to speak at your events about Syria

• Commemorate significant massacres and hold space for Syrians to mourn (Houla: May 25; Baniyas: May 3; August 25; Ghouta: August 21 (to list a few))

• Are you a Palestine organizer? Make the link to right of return with Palestinian refugees in Syria

• Advocate strongly for refugees protection

• Advocate strongly against the creation of new refugees. This means holding Russia and Iran accountable in your discourse and narrative as well.

• Work with Syrian solidarity groups to help push for accountability. And if you come from an experienced background, help them to develop these plans. After all, isn’t that what true solidarity is?

• Support independent Syrian journalists. Independent Syrian journalists are under attack from all sides. Support them by amplifying their voices, stories, efforts. Find ways to support them fiscally. Donate to organizations that support persecuted journalists.

• Are you a fluent Arabic and English speaker? Volunteer with the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP). You can conduct interviews with Syrian and Iraqi asylees seeking legal assistance to come to the US via Skype.

also here’s a list published by idress ahmad that i hope you find useful as well

1. Write to your representative and demand urgent action to protect civilians. Support the politicians who are sympathetic. Persuade those who are on the fence.

2. Write to the media to register your concerns.
3. Join the various vigils and solidarity marches currently being organised around the world.

4. Protest Russian and Iranian diplomatic outposts since they are the key actors with the capacity to halt the slaughter.

5. Use the marches and vigils as opportunities to meet likeminded people, coordinate actions and amplify messages

6. Make good use of social media. Post photos, videos, messages from any event you attend. The symbolism is important. It also sends a signal to our friends that they aren’t alone.

7. Raise awareness. Follow the courageous Syrians reporting from the ground. Follow good journalists (Guardian’s coverage in particular is excellent; Channel 4’s “Inside Aleppo” series has been great). Follow human rights organisations like Amnesty and HRW for reliable reporting.

8. Avoid disinformation and treat conspiracism with contempt. Trust nothing that comes from media like RT and Press TV or embedded journalists like Patrick Cockburn and Robert Fisk.

9. Follow The Syria Campaign. They do invaluable work, provide reliable information, and issue frequent action points.

10. Finally, and most importantly, should someone try to draw a false equivalence between the regime and the people opposing it, just remind them of the balance of atrocities.
